Robot vacuums have been around for a while now.
When you look for the best robot vacuum cleaner, iRobot and their line of Roombas is going to be what comes up time and time again.
They are the main name in these types of vacuum, but they do tend to have a much higher price tag.
There are many other fantastic robot vacuum cleaners on the market, at half the price. That is why I have put together this list of awesome Roomba alternatives.
While researching, I was able to see that there are plenty of robot vacuums on the market right now that can offer you the same thing a Roomba does but at a much more affordable price.
So if you want a robot vacuum cleaner, but think they are still way out of your price range, keep on reading and see what some of the best and affordable robot cleaners are.
The robot vacuum that makes the top of the list is the Eufy RoboVac 11.
This is another great alternative to a Roomba and currently, you can get this for well under 300 bucks which is a steal.
Once you open up the package, you will get a real kick out of how smart and sleek this looks.
It has a nice weight to it and in general, it feels incredibly well made.
Like all of the best robot vacuums, the idea of this one is that you turn it on and let it go around and do its thing. As this is doing the vacuuming it gives you more time to do other stuff.
One thing that I really liked about this is that there is no need to download an app to control it, now to be fair that is not a big deal in 2018.
However, this does have its own little remote control that is very easy to use and is in all honesty very self-explanatory. You could buy one of these for a relative who is let’s just say a little less technically inclined and they would be able to figure it out.
The Eufy RoboVac 11 is actually very powerful and I found that it cleaned up anything that stood in its way.
It does this thanks to its three-point cleaning system (it says it right on the box) so as well as a very powerful suction, it has a strong, but also gentle rolling brush that can handle any kind of surfaces like thick carpets and hardwood floors.
It also has these side brushes which look really cool when they are capturing all the dirt and mess. Speaking of capturing, you do not have to worry about this kicking a load of dust up in the air as it goes either!
I was interested to see how this would handle pet hair as we do have dogs and thankfully, it picked it up nice and easy which is going to be really handy come shedding season.
You do not have to worry about this crashing into the coffee table, slamming into a wall or even getting stuck trying to go over a rug.
This is one very smart robot vacuum cleaner and it has a sensor inside it that lets it know when there is an obstacle in its way and it can get up onto a rug no problem!
So if you set this off going around the living room, kitchen or the war zone that is one of the kid's bedrooms it will be fine.
One of the things that I really liked playing around with was the cleaning modes. Now you can set this off to just go and clean, but there are three specific modes that you can also choose.
Edge, max and spot, these are great if you have an area of your room that needs some extra attention.
As well as being easy to use, charging it is also very easy as it is self-charging, it can go into the charging dock all by itself so you never have to worry about it running out of batteries.
At the price they are asking, the Eufy RoboVac 11 is fantastic value for money. It is not just powerful, but the clever design allows it to get into corners, under the sofa and many places that are a pain to reach with your standard vacuum. Plus this really could not be any easier to use.
Next up is this awesome ECOVACS DEEBOT N79S which is actually one of the most popular robot vacuums on the market right now.
The size of this thing will really take you by surprise.
It is very compact and when you first take it out of the box, you will be impressed with just how robust it feels, even with its small stature.
The design is really cool and it does look like something from the future.
When it comes to using this, you download the free app on your smartphone or tablet. From here you have many different options at your disposal.
If you click the Clean Mode, you can pick just how it will clean your house. It will go around the living room or where ever you want it to, vacuuming up anything that gets in its way.
One of the cool things about this is the different cleaning modes that it has. For example, if one of the kids has kicked over their bowl of cookies and made a mess, you just activate the spot mode, tell it where you go and it will give that specific spot a really good vacuuming.
Honestly, playing around with the different cleaning options is a lot of fun and it also allows you to see what one is best for your house. In total there are five cleaning modes for you to make use of.
One mode that is new to this particular ECOVACS DEEBOT is their Max Mode, this will kick the power up by 50 percent. Now the battery will drain faster when this mode is activated, but it does come in really handy for more stubborn debris.
One thing that is really neat is the way that it can be connected to an Amazon Alexa so that you can just shout at it to go and clean! This is a handy feature, and it works very well.
You do not have to worry about this kicking a load of dust and other nasty particles up in the air as it has a very impressive air filtration system that can catch a lot of the dust and other nastiness before it can cause you, the kids or the pets any kind of problems.
Even pet hair is picked up with ease and will not cause you to sneeze uncontrollably as it does, which as we have two big dogs, I am very thankful for.
I set it on a path to go from the living room to the hallway. So it went from a rather thick carpet to hardwood floor. The brush rollers that are inside the ECOVACS DEEBOT N79S are very impressive in that they are designed to handle all kinds of surfaces.
Not only are the brush rollers state of the art, so is the computer inside here. It is smart enough to know when something is in its way or if the stairs are there. So you do not have to worry about this thing committing suicide in your house!
The 100-minute battery life (if you are not using Max Mode) is more than reasonable and it is so smart that it knows when it is time to head back to the changing area to it can have its battery recharged.
The ECOVACS DEEBOT N79S really is a fantastic Roomba alternative. It has powerful suction and as of right now this is the most powerful DEEBOT that the folks at ECOVACS have made and it costs a few hundred bucks less than a Roomba!
The is a very interesting robot vacuum and as it is one of the cheaper ones on the market it is easy to see why the ILIFE A4s is one of the more popular Roomba alternatives.
Seriously, a couple of hundred dollars is all this is going to cost you and that is fantastic value for money.
It has the same kind of style as pretty much every other robot vacuum on the market, but that is not a bad thing at all.
It still feels very solid, well made and it looks pretty neat too.
You get a remote control with this and it is very easy to use. One of the features that I thought was great was the way you could program it to clean at a certain time and in a certain way.
So I could set it to clean the dining room at 9 AM… once everyone is out the house and it would do it and then return to the dock once it is done. Very clever stuff indeed.
There are different settings that you can use with the ILIFE A4s such as spot, auto, and edge mode. There is also a MAX mode which is something many of these robotic vacuums have.
This kicks up the power a few notches, but at the expense of battery life. However, it is very handy for things that the kids appear to have welded onto the carpet.
This is one of the smarter robotic vacuum cleaners that I have used. It can avoid obstacles like walls and chairs, but it also will change its suction power depending on the surface that it is one.
This is great if you have a rug or if you want it to clean the hardwood floor hallway once it is finished in the living room. The sensors even allow you to put it up on the sofa as it will not fall off as it knows when it is too close to the edge.
Now that I think about it this little robot vacuum may have been the smartest thing in my house while it was cleaning.
Speaking of smart, it does have a great battery life of over 2 hours, but it knows when the battery is low and will return itself back to the charging dock for a rest.
Now as far as the actual quality of the vacuuming that this does, I was very happy. I tried it in every room in the house and even placed it on the sofa and beds.
It worked like a charm and it does have a three step cleaning system where it has powerful side brushes, a roller and a strong vacuum.
These all work together to pick up even the most stubborn and yucky mess that the kids and pets can throw its way. They do say that this is not suitable for very high pile carpets, but our living room carpet is quite thick and it had no trouble with that.
If you want to get a robot vacuum at a great price and not worry about it being “cheap” I think that you will be very happy with what the ILIFE A4s has to offer. It is a great little vacuum and super smart too!
As soon as I knew that Shark had a robot vacuum, I was super excited to try it out.
The Shark ION 750 may be a little pricier than some of the others on this list, but the fact that it is still way under 300 bucks makes it a good and cheaper Roomba alternative.
The design of this one is a little different, instead of going for an all back design (which seems to be the in thing with these types of vacuums) Shark have given it a bit more personality with a splash of grey.
You can walk over to this and just press the button on the top and it will go and start cleaning up any mess that it comes across. This is a really neat feature and ideal if you want to give a room a quick cleaning over.
However, there is more to this Shark ION ROBOT 750 than just that. You need to download the app that goes with this robot vacuum and from there you have complete control over it! You can even tell it to go make you a sandwich… ok so maybe not that much control.
But you can pick what kind of cleaning you want it to give a room. A quick going over, a powerful clean or focus on just one really awkward spot. It is up to you how you do it and thanks to it being controlled via Wi-Fi, you can set it off anywhere in your house.
If you are already living in the future and have a Google Home or Amazon Alexa, you can use your voice to boss around your little robot buddy. You may think that you would never use this, but trust me once you do it once, there is no going back to using your phone.
I found that this was a very powerful robot vacuum cleaner and like the others tested it all over my house. One of my dogs was shedding pretty bad and this picked up all of the hair and it never even got tangled up inside!
That is because this thing is smart enough to deal with really nasty and tangled dog hair, that is awesome! Cheerios and other stuff that was on the floor were no match for this.
As well as the powerful suction, you have the really solid Shark roller that scoops up anything the side brushes throw into it. It is a very smart system and one that makes light work of any mess the dogs, kids or even you have made.
It has what Shark call Smart and Proximity sensors, I know that these sound like something that would be on a spaceship in a sci-fi movie, but these sensors are what allow it to go around a room and avoid things like chair legs, the table, walls and even falling down the stairs.
If only my kids had these kinds of sensors in them! It works very well and in the time that I used it, I never once saw it crash into something.
While the Shark ION ROBOT 750 may seem a bit more expensive at first, the fact that it has Wi-Fi connectivity and also the fact that it has the Shark name on it could make it worth spending that extra bit on it.
It works great if you want something that can clean quick and easy and it also works great if you want to get really specific and set it off and a cleaning schedule.
Last, but by no means least on our Roomba alternatives guide is this MOOKA Robotic Vacuum Cleaner, which is one of the more modestly priced robot vacuums on the market right now.
You may be thinking that as this one is a little cheaper it is lacking the bells and whistles of some of the others and at first I thought that too.
However, the MOOKA Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is very well made and looks and feels as high quality as all the rest.
Once I had this out of the box and set up, I tried it with the one button cleaning mode. All of these have this, you press the button on the top and let them go clean by themselves.
It did this very well and I noticed it had no trouble in going from the carpet to the rug and back again. This is because it has a really cool system where it adjusts to the height of what it is cleaning.
So it will be able to go from the bathroom to the hallway to one of the kid's bedrooms and not require you to manual adjust anything, I think this is really neat and a huge time saver as well.
While you can place the MOOKA Robotic Vacuum Cleaner in a room and just let it go and clean, it does have some different modes that will allow you to be a bit more specific with the way it cleans.
For example, you can make sure it focusses on a tough spot or even that it goes right around the edges and cleans there.
The best advice I can give is to play around with the different settings and you will see what ones suit your houses needs best. I am sure most people will be more than happy with the one button clean system, but as I said there are other options there if you need them.
Things like dog hair, 99 percent of the kid's food and other dust and debris are handled with ease. That is because anything that this encounters is dealt with by two powerful side brushes, a super strong roller, and some high powered suction.
I tested this in every room in the house and found that it picked up everything it came across and thanks to the high-quality filters, you do not have to worry about any nasty dust getting kicked up into the air.
While the actual vacuuming mechanics of this robot vacuum are very sophisticated, so is the little computer that is powering it all.
They have packed this thing with sensors so that things like doors, your coffee table, and the stairs are not a problem. It knows if there is a danger it can fall, so it will stay away.
This is some very clever stuff and it stops you from worrying about it crashing and breaking. I was very impressed with how it handled obstacles and even though the point of a robot vacuum is so that you can relax, I will admit that I found myself watching it clean!
I was very impressed with the MOOKA Robotic Vacuum Cleaner. Not just because of the very reasonable asking price, but because it is a fantastic robot vacuum cleaner in its own right. It is smart, powerful and very easy to use.
I know that I am making this sound like some kind of Roomba witch hunt, but that is not the case at all.
Roomba is the “brand” name when it comes to robot vacuums, although the ones on this list are trying to change that. As a result, they have that brand name price.
It is kind of like Dyson. Yes Dyson make fantastic vacuum cleaners, but so do many other companies, they make similar ones that are nearly as powerful, but at a fraction of the price. This is the case with Roomba too.
Roomba robot vacuums tend to be much more expensive and that is the main issue with them. I want to show you a few reasons why you do not need to spend all that money on a Roomba and why other Roomba alternatives can be just as good.
At the most, you are getting around two hours of standard cleaning time from your robot vacuum. Some give you an hour, some 90 minutes and a couple can even stretch to a little over a couple of hours.
The current battery technology we have is not the best (you have to charge your phone every day for example) so even the more expensive robot vacuums are not going to give you any more cleaning time.
Plus the majority of them have it built into them to go back to the charging dock when the battery is low.
While the paths that the vacuums take may be different and the names of the modes also may be different, each of the vacuums that I have reviewed today has the same kind of vacuuming system as a Roomba.
They have the side brushes that pull in dirt and dust from the sides, the high powered roller underneath and then the vacuum that sucks it all up.
There is only so much room for change in a little robot vacuum so that is why even the lower priced ones have this same set up as a more expensive Roomba.
While some will let you control them via Wi-Fi with your phone via an app, and some come with their own little remote control, I have to be honest and say that there really is not a whole lot in it as far as ease of use goes.
Roomba will tell you that they are super easy to use and they are, but the thing is so is each robot vacuum that I have looked at on this list!
I could give one of these to my grandmother and she would be able to use it no problems at all. So do not be swayed when Roomba or any of the other companies tell you that theirs is the easiest to use as I have not come across one robot vacuum that is complicated to use.
Seeing a robot vacuum go near the stairs and then pull away is awesome and it also makes you think “is this thing alive and is it going to kill me?” however Roomba robot vacuums are not the only ones that do this….
Actually, they all do. Everyone that I have tested has a similar kind of sensor technology that will help them avoid obstacles like the wall, table legs and of course the number one killer of robot vacuums, the stairs!
From what I have seen there is not a single robot vacuum that does not have the ability to not fall off a surface, so it is not an exclusive feature of a Roomba.
Look, Roomba has done pretty well to bring their prices down a bit and if you get one of their much older models you can save some money.
However, the Roomba alternatives that I have tested over the last month are all currently available for well under 300 bucks. Some of them even a little under 200 bucks! You have to ask yourself if paying for that Roomba name is worth it?
I had a lot of fun reviewing these five robot vacuums. Picking one was always going to be hard and if I am being brutally honest here, there is not a whole lot of difference in the way they actually vacuum.
Some may have picked something up a little quicker than the other, but at the end of the day, if you leave any of these in a room, they are going to get the job done.
Overall, my top pick is the Eufy RoboVac 11. It has everything you need in a robot vacuum, and it is about a third of the price of the latest Roomba.
The way I look at these is not just with the price, but in how you use them. For example, if you have Amazon Alexa or a Google Home in your house, you may be interested in being able to control your robot vacuum with your voice.
So something like the ECOVACS DEEBOT N79S or the Shark ION ROBOT 750 would allow you to do this.
If that is not something you are interested in, you might as well save yourself a few bucks and go for one of the others that are closer to 200 bucks than 300. They offer good quality cleaning, are easy to use and really are great Roomba alternatives.
I think all five of these are great and to be real with you, you cannot go wrong with any of them as they all will do a great job in keeping your floors clean.
