How To Use Baking Soda As A Carpet Cleaner

No doubt you have that one relative that will tell you how you can pretty much rebuild your house after it falls down with some duct tape, soap, and a little bit of elbow grease.

Well, one old-time remedy that is actually true is that you can use baking soda as a carpet cleaner. What’s more, baking soda can actually help you get rid of grease-based and non-grease-based stains.

We have all been there when you….. I mean one of the kids drops some pizza on the carpet and you are left with a big stain.

Even after you have cleaned it up the second it happened! It is the grease that causes this and if you are a person who likes to work on things like bikes, cars and anything with an engine, grease stains are something you will know all too well about.

Well, today I have for you some advice how you can use baking soda as a carpet cleaner.

Baking Soda Is The Best Way To Clean Carpet

That is the question you are most likely asking and I can tell you that there are some great reasons as to why this is a great way to keep your carpet fresh and clean.

To start with it is very cheap and easy to use, not only that it is completely harmless and good for the environment, and it can even help get rid of any smells that the stains may be causing.

How To Use Baking Soda To Get Rid Of Non-Greasy Stains

If you have a non-greasy stain that is looking right at you on your carpet, you can use baking soda to get rid of it and it is far easier to do than you would think.

A non-greasy stain is a stain that does not have that yucky awful layer under the main part of the stain.

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is grab your baking soda and sprinkle it over the area that has a stain. Give it a good covering, making sure it is all covered up.

Step 2

Next up you want to use a spray bottle, you can get these for next to nothing in most stores. Use hot water and gently mist the baking soda. You do not want to completely soak it, so make sure you do not spray it too close. Just a gentle misting is enough.

Step 3

Once you have done “the misting” which I am aware sounds like a Stephen King novel, you want to leave it. Most folks will tell you around three hours is enough and for most stains, it probably will be.

However, if you want to make sure that the baking soda is really working its magic. Consider doing it just before you go to bed and leaving it overnight.

Step 4

Get out your vacuum and vacuum all the damp baking soda up. Take a good look and hopefully, the stain will be gone. If it is not, repeat the process and you will get rid of that stain!

How To Get Grease Out Of Carpet Using Baking Soda

Stains out of Carpets

If there is any grease in the stain that is living on your carpet, you will need to do a little bit more work. Grease stains are the worst!

I cannot tell you how many t-shirts I have ruined with grease…. Sorry I mean the kids have ruined. Anyway, keep on reading so you know how to use baking soda to remove grease stains on your carpet.

Step 1

Look at the stain! Get down nice and close and get rid of any excess grease/mess that is sitting on the top.

You can blot it away if you want with a paper towel or you can use a knife/spoon if the stain is really bad to scoop away that top layer. Please make sure you are careful as you do not want to rub it deeper into the carpet.

Step 2

Once you have gotten as much of the mess away as possible, you can now sprinkle your baking soda over the stain.

As you are using baking soda as carpet cleaner do not be cheap! Put a good covering on it, making sure the whole stain is covered. Once done, you will want to leave it sitting overnight. So if you have pets or kids put something around it to keep them away from it.

Step 3

Vacuum up all of the baking soda. If you are lucky, that stain will be long gone. If not do not worry as I have some extra help for you.

Using some standard dish soap, blot it into the stain, nice and gently. Once you have done this, get an old towel and then some water and gently remove the soap that you have put on the stain. Remember, blot the area, do not rub!

Step 4

Once you have done this, make sure the area is just a little bit damp. Cover it once again with baking soda and leave it sitting. Around three hours this time should be enough, but feel free to leave it overnight if you want to make extra sure.

Use Baking Soda To Get Rid Of The Smell Of Your Pets

Carpet Dog

Pets are awesome,  but they can smell really bad and leave a real stink on your carpet. Well, you can once again use baking soda as a carpet cleaner to help freshen up the area that your pets like to sleep on.

Step 1

Grab your baking soda and cover the area that your dog or other pet likes to sleep, give the “hot zone” a really good covering with baking soda and leave it there overnight.

Step 2

Now all you have to do is vacuum up the baking soda and you will notice the area smells much fresher.

Using Baking Soda As A General Carpet Cleaner

One last thing I want to tell you is that if you have the house to yourself for a good few hours or you can get the pets to stay in one specific room, you can use baking soda as a general carpet cleaner.

Just give the room a good sprinkle of baking soda and leave it for a few hours, then vacuum it all up and you will notice that your room smells noticeably fresher. Doing this just once a month in a different room each time will make your house smell very nice and fresh.
